Cheaper Alternatives to Taxis on Phu Quoc Island
Editorial team · Checked 5 November 2026

In short
Buses and app-booked motorbike taxis are the main cheaper options on Phu Quoc, while a taxi stays good value for groups and luggage. Guide range for taxis and app cars: VND 13,000-18,000 per km, checked on 5 November 2026.
The cheapest ways around Phu Quoc are the public bus, which has charged a fare since 2026, and an app-booked motorbike taxi, which costs roughly half the price of a car. A taxi still makes sense for groups, luggage and late hours. As a guide, one operator lists taxi and app car fares at VND 13,000-18,000 per km, checked on 5 November 2026.
Is the bus a real cheaper option?
Yes, for solo travellers and couples with flexible plans, the bus is the lowest-cost way to cover long distances on the island.
Buses on Phu Quoc were free before 2026 and now charge a fare, so older blog posts that say “free” are out of date. You pay in cash on the bus by telling the driver your destination. We do not have a fare figure we can stand behind, so check the amount on board or message us on WhatsApp.
One author concludes that buses are a real find for budget travellers. The catch is that the route network is limited and timetables can change. Our guide to the bus as a taxi alternative covers routes, hours and luggage in more detail.
Think of the bus as a daytime option for people who are relaxed about time. It fits if you are staying near a route, travelling light and happy to wait. It is a weaker fit if you have a flight to catch, small children or a plan with several stops, because every change and every wait is on you.
How much cheaper is a motorbike taxi?
A motorbike taxi booked through an app costs about half the price of a taxi, so it is the best cheap option for one person in a hurry.
It is budget-friendly and fast, and it suits people with minimal luggage. It does not suit a family, a big suitcase or a rainy evening. Availability on the island can vary, so open the app and check before you plan around it.
Use it for the short, solo trips where a car feels like overkill: a ride to dinner, a hop between two beaches, a quick errand. For anything involving a suitcase, a second passenger or a long road in the rain, price a car instead. The saving only counts if the ride is comfortable and safe for you.
Renting your own motorbike is a different decision with legal and insurance questions. Read motorbike or taxi rules before you decide.
Can I walk or cycle for short trips?
Yes, but only for short distances in flat, easy areas.
Cycling is described as ideal for short distances and scenic rides in pedestrian-friendly areas such as Duong Dong and Long Beach, and it is sensible to stay on paved roads. Walking suits a meal, a market or a beach café that is close to your hotel. Beyond that, a ride is usually more practical.
A practical rule: if the trip feels like something you could walk on a cool morning, walk or cycle it. If you would arrive tired, sweaty or late, ride instead. Heat is a real cost on a tropical island, and the cheapest option is not cheap if it spoils the day.
Our page on cycling short trips on Phu Quoc explains where it works and where it does not.
Can I share a ride with other travellers?
Yes. A taxi fare is for the car, not per person, so sharing is one of the simplest ways to cut your cost.
Three ways to do it:
- Ask your hotel whether other guests are going the same way at the same time.
- Travel with the people you already know and take one larger car instead of two small ones.
- Message us on WhatsApp with your route and date. We arrange it with local partners and confirm the exact price in the chat before you pay.
Some high-end hotels offer free airport transfers to their guests. If that applies to you, it beats every other option on price, so ask before you book anything else.
When is a taxi still the better value?
A taxi is better value when you are carrying luggage, travelling as a group or family, arriving late, or when the weather is bad.
The table below compares the options. Taxi figures are guide ranges read from operator pages on 5 November 2026. Each figure comes from one operator and figures differ by operator, so treat them as a guide and not as a quote.
| Option | Best for | Cost note |
|---|---|---|
| Public bus | Solo budget travellers, daytime | Fare paid in cash on board, amount not quoted here |
| App motorbike taxi | One person, light bags | About half the price of a car |
| Walking or cycling | Short hops in town | Free to low cost |
| Shared car | Groups and families | One fare split between people |
| Taxi or app car | Luggage, groups, late hours | VND 13,000-18,000 per km |
Other taxi figures from the same pages:
- Starting fare: VND 10,000-15,000.
- Longer rides, from km 31: one local taxi company lists VND 11,000-12,000 per km.
- Airport to a Long Beach hotel, as cited by one author: USD 6 to 8 (VND 150,000-200,000).
- Metered taxi to Duong Dong Town: USD 7 to 10 (VND 180,000-250,000).
Booking through an app can also protect you from haggling. One source reports that an app booking can be at least twice as cheap as hailing a taxi on the street. Either way, agree the price or ask for the meter before you set off.
Questions worth asking before any ride:
- Is the meter on, or is there a fixed price we both agree?
- What is the total, and does it include tolls, luggage or a late-night fee?
- Is the price for the whole car, or per person?
- Can the driver wait or come back for a return trip, and is that extra?
What to do next
Pick the option that fits your bags and your group, then check the details on the page for that option.
